How Rave Culture works?

I have to write a research paper on rave culture in the United States for one of my classes. My teacher said to find out what the ideals of ravers are and what those actually involved in the rave culture are trying to do, how they understand themselves as different from some mainstream/dominant/industrial/etc. culture. The first key part of the assignment is to establish the types and forms of difference that those in the cultural formation are trying to establish. In class we have been talking about cultural industries and how rave is more of an underground type of scene so it is different than mainstream culture. I don't really know anything about raves so any insight on this culture will help!
