Pretty little liars spoiler (ali's killer)?

ok so i read in a few places that ali's killer is courtney, her twin sister (or actually... courtney's killer is ali lol) so where was ali/courtney (the live one) when all of this was going on? how did her best friends not know that ali had a twin sister?! confuseddd!
